Who is Megan Siffring?

Land, connection, and equity

Megan Siffring was born and raised in Kailua, Hawai`i, but has proudly called Colorado home for the past 14 years. Her husband is an Aurora-born Coloradoan, and they chose to raise their daughters in this vibrant city.

Since she was a child, Megan has always been justice-driven, and consequently outspoken about social issues. Growing up in Hawai`i, where natural resources are limited and revered, environmental concerns are inherently extremely important to her.

She strives to do her part to help make the planet not only livable, but a thriving Mecca of opportunity for the next generation.

The diverse sociocultural climate in which Megan spent her formative years rooted in her a deep propensity to advocate for others, using her voice to amplify that of those in need of support. With Aurora being the most diverse city in this state, she feels right at home in the mosaic of music, food, language, and culture.

Living paycheck to paycheck is an unchosen lifestyle for many these days, and Megan is no stranger to it. Having always rolled her sleeves up through job scarcity, low pay, and the cost of living perpetually rising, she is not motivated by money. Rather, she is motivated by people, and the prospect of helping every person achieve the life they want and deserve -- regardless of color, creed, gender, or tax bracket.

She comes from Hispanic heritage, and is grateful to experience more cultural exposure here in Colorado. Her grandmother immigrated from Mexico as a child, now legally living in California.

In elementary school, Megan volunteered her time to teach 3rd graders Spanish weekly in a previous teacher's class. Though her Spanish skills nowadays are rusty, she practices the language with neighbors, her sister, and her grandmother whenever possible.

All of our diverse backgrounds are what makes Aurora such a great place to live. But People of Color are disproportionally disadvantaged in all aspects of our nation's society, from healthcare to housing, and everything in between. We need someone in office who not only stands in solidarity, but someone who is not afraid to get LOUD to bring about equity.

As an editorial journalist on her high school paper, Megan used her literary platform to speak up about local issues while simultaneously learning to convey thoughts and ideas in an organized, researched, and thoughtful manner.

As a songwriter for decades, she has sang against social injustices through her music in the public arena.

Through college and upon graduating from the Culinary Institute of the Pacific, Megan has worked in every food service and hospitality position she could get her hands on. The varied industry experiences filled her with even greater empathy and understanding for the challenges of the working class that she was a part of, and fueled her dedication to play a bigger part in the solutions.

In 2019, with her three-month-old first daughter in-tow, she fulfilled a lifelong dream and opened her first restaurant, right off of East Colfax in our neighboring city of Denver.

Before the COVID pandemic forced its closure, small business ownership and operation shed a tremendous light on the struggles facing entrepreneurs and consumers alike. Conversely, it exposed a beautiful new layer of community and local collaboration, further strengthening her love for connection and people.

At the end of 2020, Megan and her husband welcomed their second daughter, who was diagnosed with Apraxia, a rare motor-speech diagnosis that requires intensive therapy and educational intervention. They wanted to be as informed and involved as possible, so Megan quickly volunteered as the Lead Coordinator for nonprofit organization Apraxia Kids' annual charity Walk for Apraxia in Denver. Through running this event for the past two years, she has formed invaluable relationships with local and national families affected by Apraxia, and the incredible community that supports these amazing kids.

Navigating motherhood through a pandemic was no easy feat, but it taught her the depth of her resilience, extended her patience, and unlocked a new realm of creative problem solving. She is endlessly grateful to be able to help raise two kindhearted, strong, smart, thoughtful, and hilarious tiny humans to share their bright light with the world.

In her free time, Megan enjoys spending time with her husband and their daughters, hiking through Colorado's many amazing trails, writing, listening to and playing music, gardening, road tripping to random places, swimming, thrifting, crafting, cooking, and baking.

Megan is not a politician: she doesn’t believe that there should be a pyramid of power, only serving those at the top. She believes that we all deserve a say in the policies and procedures that directly impact our everyday lives.

We are at our strongest when we band together, and having someone represent the community *as* a fellow community member is the best way to ensure that *all* of our basic needs can be met.
